07:45 AM EST, 01/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms' ( META ) revised pay-or-consent policy again comes under scrutiny in the European Union after the European Consumer Organization flagged the rules' potential violation of the Digital Markets Act and consumer and data protection laws.
The European Consumer Organization, or BEUC, said Thursday that it has written to relevant EU authorities to raise concerns over the second version of the Meta policy, which was released late 2024.
According to the group, the company's updated pay-or-consent policy uses "unclear terms and confusing interface design" to direct users toward Meta's preferred option. The BEUC also claimed that the new policy does not give users the option to fully and freely consent to the processing of their data, while services are degraded to those who do not consent to the use of their data.
A spokesperson for Meta Platforms ( META ) told MT Newswires that the company disagrees with the BEUC's interpretation of the policy, citing a company blog saying the changes "meet EU regulator demands and go beyond what's required by EU law."
