09:55 AM EST, 12/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) said Tuesday that its analysis of global elections in 2024 indicated limited influence from generative artificial intelligence tools like deepfakes or synthetic content.
The social media giant said that despite concerns earlier in the year about the potential of generative AI tools to disrupt electoral processes, its monitoring of global elections in countries like the US, India, and Mexico including EU elections showed that the use of AI to manipulate elections was minimal, representing less than 1% of flagged misinformation globally.
Meta said it deployed several initiatives to support the elections, including improved content moderation policies, transparency for political advertising, and measures to combat misinformation. Its platforms deployed reminders and notifications about voting procedures, it added.
Meta also said that it removed roughly 20 covert influence operations this year with a majority of them originating in Russia and also rejected multiple AI-generated deepfake requests during the US elections.
The company said it is collaborating with global entities to address AI misuse, including signing the AI Elections Accord and launching specialized tools like WhatsApp tiplines in India.
