12:45 PM EDT, 04/03/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Quantinuum achieved a milestone in developing a hybrid supercomputing system through quantum computing after they reached "the most reliable logical qubits on record," a Microsoft ( MSFT ) executive said Wednesday in a blog post.

"By applying Microsoft's ( MSFT ) breakthrough qubit-virtualization system, with error diagnostics and correction, to Quantinuum's ion-trap hardware, we ran more than 14,000 individual experiments without a single error," said Jason Zander, executive vice president, strategic missions and technologies.

Qubit is the basic unit of information in quantum computing, and the companies said their logical qubits record moves their quantum supercomputing project to level 2 resilient from level 1 foundational. Microsoft ( MSFT ) said the advanced capabilities from the achieved logical qubits will be available in the coming months through a private preview for Azure Quantum Elements.

The partners said they continue to "invest heavily" in reaching level 3 of quantum supercomputing, which is expected to unlock new applications and address challenging problems in chemistry and materials science.
