11:11 AM EDT, 06/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- PPL (PPL) said Wednesday its Louisville Gas and Electric, and Kentucky Utilities units will explore additional locations and partnerships that could support nuclear energy in the commonwealth.
The move follows an earlier assessment of nuclear feasibility at the site of an existing Kentucky coal-fired power plant, the company said.
A previous study by the company and Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear, or GAIN, at a facility in Ghent, Kentucky, determined that although the site is suitable for a nuclear small modular reactor, it would have "potential size constraints" for a larger traditional nuclear reactor, PPL said.
The study's phase two will explore alternative locations and industrial partnerships, the company said.
GAIN is an initiative of the US Department of Energy.
