Qualcomm urges India to embrace Wi-Fi 7 amid spectrum allocation dispute
Oct 13, 2023 9:04 AM

At a time when telcos and broadband companies are at loggerheads over allocation of the 6 gigahertz spectrum band, software company Qualcomm has said the country should switch to the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology. Speaking to CNBC-TV18's Ashmit Kumar, Qualcomm's management said that Wi-Fi 7 works well with the 6 gigahertz spectrum bands.

Rahul Patel, the Senior Vice President and General Manager at Qualcomm, ardently asserted, "Wi-Fi 7, as I've been emphasising all day, is precisely what India needs. It offers a unique capability that doesn't rely on the allocation of spectrum within the 6 gigahertz band. This technology addresses numerous concerns that have arisen with Wi-Fi 6 and earlier generations, while also aligning with India's rapid adoption of cloud-based and wireless applications."

Reflecting on the opportunities that lie ahead for Qualcomm, Patel remarked, "I see the variability within the 6 gigahertz spectrum as an opportunity rather than a challenge. By being a global leader and remaining mindful of spectrum availability and its associated dynamics worldwide, Qualcomm can develop technology that effectively addresses these issues. The variability in the availability of 6 gigahertz is not exclusive to India; it's a global concern. Wi-Fi 7 has been purposefully designed to accommodate this variability, and India is no exception."

He continued, "We wholeheartedly encourage the Government of India to make informed decisions regarding the use of the 6 gigahertz spectrum, whether for licensed or unlicensed purposes, or a combination of both. Wi-Fi 7, as we have designed it, is adaptable and will harness the advantages of the spectrum availability, whatever form it takes."

Savi Soinm, President of Qualcomm India, shed light on the promising developments in the country. "There are numerous bright spots in India,"

He observed. "When you consider the digital transformation in the enterprise sector, fixed wireless connectivity, smartphone technology, and the potential of Artificial Intelligence, especially Edge AI, it becomes evident that India is teeming with opportunities. System integrators in India can pioneer innovation at the edge while maintaining a strong focus on the government's digital initiatives regarding security and privacy. In India, every facet of technological advancement presents an exciting opportunity."
