11:30 AM EDT, 09/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- RTX (RTX) must meet additional criteria if it is to successfully deliver its ground network to control GPS satellites by the October target date, the Government Accountability Office said in a report Monday.
The Department of Defense has worked for over two decades to modernize its GPS with a jam-resistant, more secure, military-specific signal known as M-code. Modernizing GPS with M-code, in part, requires the development of a ground control system that can allow the launch and control of existing and new satellites. RTX was contracted by the GPS Next Generation Operational Control System, or OCX, program under the Space Force to develop the series of block upgrades to modernize the ground segment of the project.
"After multiple delays, ground segment modernization has completed some key testing, but further testing and demonstration is needed before the military departments can accept the system," the GAO said in its report.
In order to meet the October delivery target date, Raytheon must complete installation of the Alternate Master Control Station at Vandenberg Space Force Base; ensure the OCX passes remaining testing for critical requirements in qualification testing; ensure OCX successfully completes Site Acceptance Testing; and finalize OCX technical orders prior to delivery, according to the report.
RTX did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
