The Department of Telecommunication has asked the industry to look for ways to block social media apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, The Hindu Business Line reported on Tuesday.

The ministry had issued a notice to all major stakeholders on July 18 saying it wants to explore ways of blocking apps under the Cyber Law Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the report said citing an unnamed industry source.

A DoT source, however, told the newspaper on condition of anonymity that there is no move to block any apps.
