04:40 PM EDT, 08/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) on Friday filed a motion to overturn a jury's $243 million verdict in a lawsuit over a 2019 fatal crash involving the automaker's Model S vehicle that was in Autopilot mode.
Earlier in August, a jury found Tesla partially liable for the crash that resulted in the death of a person and severely injured another.
The electric vehicle maker asked a judge to throw out the verdict, order a new trial, or reduce the punitive damages, according to a court document filed with a federal court in Florida.
"Auto manufacturers do not insure the world against harms caused by reckless drivers," Tesla said in the court filing. "Imposing liability under these circumstances will only deter innovation, confound consumer expectations, and lead manufacturers to abandon safety enhancements for fear of being subjected to large punishments when a driver misuses their product -- creating all the wrong incentives for manufacturers."
