10:04 AM EDT, 03/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) completed the first of several steps needed to operate its Robotaxi business in California, securing a Transportation Charter Permit from the California Public Utilities Commission.
The class A permit was issued Tuesday and expires in three years, according to utility commission records. The state agency said the certificate allows the company to offer a charter or round-trip sightseeing service "between any points in the state."
Tesla would also need to obtain permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles along with a separate authorization from the utilities commission before it could run a fully autonomous robotaxi service charging customers, according to media reports.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
Shares were up more than 2% in recent trading.
