04:08 PM EDT, 05/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- A TotalEnergies (TTE) subsidiary is seeking formal permission to advance a "green" hydrogen and ammonia project near the southern tip of South America, documents filed on Monday for review by environmental regulators in Chile show.
The $16 billion H2 Magallanes project includes a desalination plant and wind turbines to power electrolysis centers separating hydrogen and oxygen from water pulled from the ocean, according to a TotalEnergies presentation on the company website.
H2 Magallanes also includes a separate facility capturing nitrogen from the air and combining it with hydrogen to produce ammonia along with storage and other infrastructure connecting the finished products to ships for seaborne transport.
The company selected the project area in Chile's sub-anarctic region due to the windy conditions common to the Strait of Magellan, TotalEnergies said
The environmental review is expected to take about two years, according to local media.
