04:59 AM EDT, 06/04/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The White House said Tuesday that President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation to double the tariff on steel and aluminum imports to 50%, effective Wednesday.

The Trump administration "is cracking down on false import declarations by requiring strict reporting of steel and aluminum content" and imposing penalties on violators, the White House said.

Trump has temporarily spared the UK from the new tariff rate, though he said that the US might increase the tariff on the UK "on or after July 9" if it determines that the UK has not complied with "relevant aspects" of the US-UK Economic Prosperity Deal of May 8.
