10:29 AM EDT, 05/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- President Donald Trump threatened to impose at least 25% tariffs on Apple ( AAPL ) if the tech giant sticks to its policy of manufacturing iPhones outside the US.
This follows Trump's remark from last week that he had asked Apple ( AAPL ) CEO Tim Cook to stop producing in India.
"I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple ( AAPL ) that I expect their (iPhones) that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else," Trump wrote in a social media post on Friday. "If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple ( AAPL ) to the US."
Apple ( AAPL ) shares fell 2.4% in Friday trading.
Producing iPhones in the US is not "feasible" due to pricing and supply chain challenges, Wedbush Securities said in a Friday note, calling the idea a "fairy tale."
Wedbush analysts led by Daniel Ives estimate that manufacturing iPhones domestically could raise their price to about $3,500, adding that it would take five to 10 years to shift production to the US.
During a quarterly earnings call at the beginning of this month, Cook said he expected the majority of iPhones sold in the US to have India as their source country for the ongoing three-month period, and China to be the country of origin for a "vast majority" of product sales outside the US.
Cook's comments came as the US and China raised duties on each other's goods. However, Washington and Beijing recently agreed on a 90-day suspension of tariffs.
"We believe (Apple ( AAPL )) will continue to navigate this complex tariff situation in a game of negotiations especially heading into iPhone 17 production this fall," Ives said Friday. Wedbush maintained its outperform rating on Apple's ( AAPL ) stock with a $270 price target.
Apple ( AAPL ) in February announced plans to invest more than $500 billion in the US over the next four years, including for an artificial intelligence server factory in Texas.
