08:08 AM EDT, 05/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Uber Technologies ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) will face a non-jury trial in Massachusetts on Monday for allegedly misclassifying their drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
The lawsuit was first filed in 2020 by then-Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey.
The incumbent AG Andrea Joy Campbell claims that drivers of Uber ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) are employees under state law and are entitled to benefits, including minimum wage, overtime, and paid sick time.
Both Uber ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) argue that their drivers are properly classified and that the technology firms provide apps facilitating connections between drivers and potential riders rather than acting as transportation companies that employ drivers.
Uber ( UBER ) and Lyft ( LYFT ) warned that they would be forced to cease operations in the state if Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Peter Krupp rules against them.
