United States Steel Says EPA, DOJ Authorize Consent Decree for Clairton Plant Incidents

10:50 AM EDT, 03/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- United States Steel ( X ) said Tuesday that the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice have authorized the consent decree that addressed the Clairton Plant fire in 2018 and power outages in 2019 and 2022.

The consent decree with the Allegheny County Health Department, Clean Air Council, and PennEnvironment has yet to receive final approval from the Federal District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the company said.

The company said that under the consent decree, it agreed to invest about $19.5 million to upgrade coke oven gas cleaning facilities, contribute $4.5 million to public health and air quality projects in Mon Valley, and pay $500,000 to the Allegheny County Clean Air Fund, among others.
