05:30 AM EDT, 09/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Stellantis' ( STLA ) response in the fifth and sixth paragraphs, and the latest stock movement in the seventh paragraph.)
The United Auto Workers said Tuesday it plans to hold strike votes at Stellantis ( STLA ) chapters in the coming days.
"In the coming days we will be holding strike authorization votes at one or more Stellantis ( STLA ) locals," union president Shawn Fain said on Tuesday in a live-streamed broadcast.
Fain accused Stellantis ( STLA ) of having "declared war on the American working class" in a live-streamed broadcast by withholding investments it had agreed to and attempting to close plants.
"We're going to take action against Stellantis ( STLA ) up to and including a national strike if necessary," Fain said. "Stellantis ( STLA ) wants everyone to believe that they simply can't keep their commitments to American auto workers when they're one of the most profitable auto companies."
"Stellantis ( STLA ) is attempting to carefully manage how and when we launch new products in an electric vehicle market that is still highly volatile," a Stellantis ( STLA ) spokesperson told MT Newswires in an email. "The commitments we made during 2023 negotiations span the life of the 4-year, 7 1/2-month agreement, so it is not surprising that they haven't been fully realized in the first year. And to be clear, Shawn Fain's claim that the company has confirmed plans for the Dodge Durango is simply not true. The company has confirmed no such thing."
The spokesperson also added that Fain continues to allege that the automaker has breached the agreements, "but to date has provided no data or information to back up his claims."
Shares of the company were up 4% in recent Thursday premarket activity.
