Update: Exxon Mobil Brand Sued by Australia Regulator Over Allegedly Misleading Statements About Fuel
Dec 18, 2024 1:04 AM

03:46 AM EST, 12/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Exxon Mobil's ( XOM ) response in the last two paragraphs.)

Exxon Mobil's ( XOM ) Australian brand affiliate is facing legal proceedings initiated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission over allegations of false or misleading statements about fuel sold at six Mobil stations in Queensland, the regulator said Tuesday.

The watchdog alleges that between August 2020 and July 2024, Mobil falsely advertised that higher quality "Mobil Synergy" fuel was being sold at the sites "when Mobil did not in fact supply Mobil Synergy fuel to these sites."

The regulator said it is seeking penalties, declarations, costs and other remedies.

Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) said in a statement that the conduct under scrutiny impacted less than 1% of its Australian network for a limited time as a result of delays associated in part with the COVID-19 pandemic and other supply issues.

"Mobil has cooperated fully with the ACCC during its investigation and is taking steps to ensure it does not engage in similar conduct going forward," the company said.
