GE Aerospace (GE) faced a strike by hundreds of employees at plants in Kentucky and Ohio on Thursday after the expiration of the previous contract and a vote in favor of a labor action last week, news outlets reported.
United Auto Workers union members at plants in Evendale, Ohio, which builds marine and industrial engines for the US Navy, and Erlanger, Kentucky, distribution facility had voted last week to halt work over job security, health care costs, and time off, the union has said.
Over 600 workers have now gone on strike following the expiration of the contract on Wednesday, Reuters cited union President Shawn Fain as saying.
"We are proud of our last offer we tabled for our 640 UAW-represented employees and are disappointed the Detroit-based UAW leaders have decided to strike before our employees have an opportunity to vote," a GE Aerospace spokesperson said in a statement e-mailed to MT Newswires.
"We remain focused on serving our customers and have activated a detailed contingency plan, deploying experienced and qualified GE Aerospace employees to ensure continued operations with the highest levels of safety and quality," the spokesperson said.
