07:50 AM EDT, 07/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) statement in third paragraph.)
A global Microsoft ( MSFT ) outage disrupted operations across multiple industries on Friday, affecting flights, broadcasts, as well as the banking and health care systems, according to multiple reports.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) also suffered a major outage resulting from an issue with its latest update, the reports said.
A spokesperson for CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) said the incident was caused by a defect in a single content update for Windows hosts, and is not a security issue or a cyberattack. "The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," the company said in a statement emailed to MT Newswires.
Shares of Microsoft ( MSFT ) were down more than 1%, while CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) fell more than 10% in recent premarket activity.
Airlines, telecoms, banks and media broadcasters in Australia were also impacted by the outage, local media reported.
Meanwhile, major US airlines have grounded flights over apparent communication problems, the reports said.
In an X post early Friday, Microsoft ( MSFT ) 365 said that "multiple services are continuing to see improvements in availability as our mitigation actions progress."
Microsoft ( MSFT ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
