Update: Google DeepMind Announces Protocols to Identify Harmful AI Capabilities
May 17, 2024 9:17 AM

11:54 AM EDT, 05/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with additional details throughout.)

Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google DeepMind introduced its Frontier Safety Framework on Friday, a set of protocols to proactively identify future AI capabilities that could cause severe harm and mitigate them.

While AI technology is set to revolutionize the way we solve critical global problems, from climate change to drug discovery to economic productivity, it may also bring with it new risks that are beyond the capabilities of current models, DeepMind said in a blog post.

The framework will focus on risks caused by model-level capabilities, including exceptional agency or advanced cyber capabilities, the company said.

The project will complement the company's "alignment research, which trains models to act in accordance with human values and societal goals, and Google's ( GOOG ) existing suite of AI responsibility and safety practices," DeepMind said.

The framework is expected to be fully implemented by early next year, the company said.

Alphabet shares were rising 0.7% in recent trading.
