Update: Market Chatter: American Airlines in Talks to Make Citigroup Exclusive Credit Card Partner
Sep 22, 2024 9:42 AM

10:57 AM EDT, 09/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Citigroup's ( C ) response in the fifth paragraph.)

American Airlines Group ( AAL ) is in talks with Citigroup ( C ) to make the bank its exclusive credit card partner, a move that would see the airline drop Barclays ( JJCTF ) from a partnership that goes back to 2013, CNBC reported Friday, citing people with knowledge of the negotiations.

American has been working with card networks and banks for months on a new long-term deal, as it seeks to consolidate its business with a single issuer, the people reportedly told CNBC.

The talks are ongoing, and the timing of an agreement, which would require regulatory approval, is not known, CNBC reported, citing the people.

"We continue to work with all of our partners, including our co-branded credit card partners, to explore opportunities to improve the products and services we provide our mutual customers and bring even more value to the AAdvantage program," American Airlines ( AAL ) said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.

"We are always actively working with our partners, including American Airlines ( AAL ), to look for ways to jointly enhance customer products, and drive shared value and growth," Citigroup ( C ) said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.

Barclays ( JJCTF ) declined to comment to MT Newswires.
