Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) offered to divest its advertising marketplace AdX after the European Commission launched an antitrust probe targeting the search engine's lucrative business, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing two people with direct knowledge of the matter.
European publishers dismissed the proposal because they want Google ( GOOG ) to divest more than just AdX to address conflicts of interest with the company's role in many levels of the adtech supply chain, the report said.
A Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson said the company "remains committed" to its AdX business without directly commenting on the reported offer to sell the unit.
"As we have said before, the European Commission's case about our third-party display advertising products rests on flawed interpretations of the ad tech sector, which is fiercely competitive and rapidly evolving," the spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires.
