Meta Platforms ( META ) executives are pushing the Trump administration to respond aggressively against a European Union fine and cease-and-desist order, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday citing unnamed people familiar with the conversations.
The so-called "discriminatory decision" relates to whether Meta should give Facebook and Instagram users the option of accessing those platforms for free without seeing personalized ads, which are the main source of revenue for the company, the people said.
Meta hopes that US pressure will urge the European Commission to ease the company's need to comply with the decision, according to the report.
A committee of EU member-state representatives on Friday approved the Commission's plan to order the company to comply with the bloc's tech law, one of the sources told WSJ.
"This is not just about fines, it's about the Commission seeking to handicap successful American businesses simply because they're American, while letting Chinese and European rivals off the hook," a Meta spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires.
The European Commission declined to comment while the White House did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
