Shell (SHEL) said Friday it shut down one of the oil processing units at its energy and chemicals park at Pulau Bukom to investigate a suspected leak detected Thursday.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said Shell had informed it and Singapore's National Environment Agency that a few metric tons of refined oil were leaked along with the discharge of seawater used to cool the refinery.
Shell said "that oil sheens were spotted alongside a wharf" on Thursday. "This is suspected to be from one of the oil processing units, resulting in some of the refined oil products to be released into the water," the company said. "We have temporarily shut down one of the oil processing units to investigate this leak. Emergency response specialists have been activated to manage the situation.
Shell said it laid absorption and containment booms and sprayed dispersants in the suspected discharge area.
The maritime authority said it and Shell deployed boats to clean up oil sheens. "No oil patches are currently observed in the vicinity of Pulau Bukom," the maritime authority said.
