Update: T-Mobile US Fined $60 Million for Data Breach
Aug 16, 2024 3:26 AM

06:01 AM EDT, 08/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Adds statement from T-Mobile in fourth and fifth paragraphs.)

T-Mobile US ( TMUS ) was fined $60 million for data breach incidents and failing to promptly report these, violating the national security agreement that allowed its merger with Sprint to push through, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US said.

CFIUS said T-Mobile failed to prevent unauthorized access to certain sensitive data between August 2020 and June 2021. The company's failure to promptly notify CFIUS delayed efforts to investigate and reduce potential damage, according to the committee.

"CFIUS concluded that these violations resulted in harm to the national security equities of the United States," CFIUS said on its website.

T-Mobile told MT Newswires in an emailed statement that they experienced technical issues during its post-merger integration with Sprint that affected the information it shares with authorities, adding that the incident was not a breach.

"The noted unauthorized access was that information was sent to the wrong law enforcement agency, but it never left the law enforcement ecosystem," T-Mobile said. "We reported this in a timely manner, and the issue was quickly addressed."
