Update: United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain Faces Federal Monitor's Scrutiny
Jun 11, 2024 12:26 PM

03:11 PM EDT, 06/11/2024 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with federal monitor declines to comment in the last paragraph.)

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain is being investigated by federal court-appointed monitor Neil Barofsky over alleged retaliation against other union officials, according to a Monday court filing.

Barofsky opened the investigation after the union's secretary-treasurer, whose field assignments were withdrawn by Fain with the support of the union's International Executive Board, made allegations of retaliation against Fain. Barofsky later expanded the investigation to include additional allegations of retaliation by Fain against a union vice president, according to the filing.

The monitor also opened a separate investigation into potential embezzlement by an unnamed IEB member and regional director, the court document showed.

"We encourage the monitor to investigate whatever claims are brought to their office, because we know what they'll find: a UAW leadership committed to serving the membership and running a democratic union," Fain said in a statement, according to media reports.

The UAW under Fain's leadership signed contracts with General Motors ( GM ) , Ford Motor ( F ) , and Stellantis ( STLA ) , last year.

The monitor declined to comment to MT Newswires, while the union did not immediately respond.
