06:04 AM EDT, 10/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US equity investors will watch out for any further escalation in the Trump administration's renewed tariff tensions with China this week while focusing on the start of Q3 earnings and an ongoing partial federal government shutdown.
* "Don't worry about China, it will all be fine," US President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday. On Friday, Trump announced additional tariffs of 100% on China, effective Nov. 1, as well as export controls on "any and all critical software." Earlier, he threatened to cancel a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, following Beijing's reported decision to impose new export controls on rare earth minerals.
* "Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn't want Depression for his country, and neither do I. The U.S.A. wants to help China, not hurt it," Trump said Sunday.
* The Nasdaq Composite slumped 3.6% last week, while the S&P 500 dropped 2.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.9% in the aftermath of Trump's threatening post. Following the president's softer tone on Sunday, equity futures rebounded almost 500 points on the Nasdaq and the Dow and nearly 100 points on the S&P 500.
* The US bond market is, however, still cautious. The 10-year US Treasury yield slid 8.9 basis points to 4.06% and the two-year rate dropped seven basis points to 3.53% early Monday.
* The dollar strengthened, gaining 0.8% against the Japanese yen to 152.35.
* Investors will also focus on a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, alongside several other top central bank officials.
* Gold futures were up 2.4% at $4,092, after scaling a new all-time high of $4,098.50 earlier on Monday.
* JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ) , Wells Fargo ( WFC ) , Goldman Sachs ( GS ) , BlackRock ( BLK ) , and Citigroup ( C ) are scheduled to kick off the Q3 earnings season Tuesday.
* The Senate has failed seven times to pass funding bills that would bring an end to the partial federal government shutdown, which entered its 13th day on Monday. The next vote is scheduled for Tuesday.
