US Steel Buyout by Nippon Steel Faces Renewed Opposition From Labor Leader
May 26, 2025 12:50 PM

03:24 PM EDT, 05/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US Steel's (X) acquisition by Japan's Nippon Steel faced renewed opposition from United Steelworkers International President David McCall, who called on the Trump administration to "act decisively" to block the sale.

The sale "will be a disaster for American steelworkers, our national security and the future of American manufacturing," McCall said Thursday in a statement after reports that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US submitted its recommendation to President Donald Trump,

An increasing number of steelworkers have supported the deal, urging Trump to approve the sale, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing an interview with a United Steelworkers local vice president.

US Steel and Nippon Steel didn't immediately reply to requests for comment from MT Newswires.

US Steel shares rose 2.1% in recent trading Thursday.
