The government is committed to free Assam of illegal immigrants, said finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in an interview to The Economic Times.

When Sharma was asked what the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) means for the state, he told the paper that the issue of foreigners has plagued Assam for several decades, especially since 1971 when the agitations had started adding that these incidents have brought a 'deep sense of distrust in Assamese society. '
