Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

01:06 PM EDT, 05/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were lower. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.1% softer.

US equity indexes were mixed Tuesday after more Federal Reserve officials opined on the path ahead for interest rates while investors awaited Nvidia's ( NVDA ) quarterly earnings.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) fell 0.3% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) edged down 0.3%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 0.3%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were mixed, with the latter trading lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 0.4% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) slid 0.2%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) gained 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 0.7% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 0.7%.

Commodities

Crude was down 1.6%; United States Oil Fund (USO) decreased 1.5%. Natural gas was down 1.1%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) fell 0.7%.

Gold was down 0.6% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.2%. Silver was down 1.2% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.4% higher.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) gained 0.1%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were mixed, wit the latter trading lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) fell 0.2%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was fractionally lower, and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were mixed, with the latter trading lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.9%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) fell 0.5% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
