Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Alok Verma, who was ousted from the agency by a high-powered selection committee yesterday, has resigned from service.

Verma said in his resignation letter, that it was a moment of "collective introspection".
"Also, it may be noted that the undersigned already superannuated as on January 31, 2017 and was only serving government as director, CBI till January 31, 2019, as the same was fixed tenure role. The undersigned is no longer Director, CBI and has already crossed the superannuation age for DG Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards. Accordingly, the undersigned may be deemed as superannuated with effect from today," Verma said in his letter to Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training Friday.
The move came after a high powered selection committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice A K Sikri and leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, in a split verdict, decided to transfer him 21 days ahead of the completion of his tenure.
Verma who was transferred as the director general fire services, civil defence and home guards, two days after Supreme Court reinstated him as the CBI chief, was replaced by M Nageshwar Rao as interim director till government finds next director for the agency, a government order said Thursday.
The government gave the charge of the agency to additional director Rao who was also in-charge for 77 days when Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana were on forced leave.
After taking charge, Rao on Friday cancelled all transfer decisions taken by his ousted predecessor Verma, reverting to the position of officials as on January 8, officials said.
The fresh order issued by Rao declared all the orders issued by Verma as "non est". "...And consequently all actions in pursuance thereof by all concerned are also hereby declared as null and void. In other words, status-quo ante as on January 8, 2019 stands restored," the order said.
