Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Employment opportunities, healthcare, drinking water top priorities of Tamil Nadu voters, says survey
Apr 14, 2019 5:05 AM

A survey by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that better employment opportunities, better hospitals/primary healthcare centres and drinking water would be the biggest issues with the voters in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

For around 40 percent of voters in the state, including rural and urban, better employment opportunities matter more than other issues, according to the survey.

The second priority for 37 percent Tamil Nadu voters was better health care by way of more hospitals and primary health centres, while the third concern for 35 percent electors was the availability of drinking water, the survey said.

The ADR survey revealed that the performance of the government on all top three voters’ priorities was rated as below average.

In the rural areas, 40 percent of voters preferred water for agriculture and availability of agriculture loan, while 37 percent spoke of the need subsidy in seed and fertilisers, the survey showed.

According to the survey, the government has performed poorly on higher price realisation for farm products and better employment opportunities in rural Tamil Nadu.

"For the urban voters in Tamil Nadu, the topmost priorities are better employment Opportunities (48 percent), traffic congestion (46 percent), and better hospitals/primary healthcare centres (43 percent)," the survey said.

In addition, ADR report said, the voters said the government has performed poorly on noise pollution and drinking water in urban areas.

"The Tamil Nadu Survey Report points to the fact that voters’ priorities in Tamil Nadu have been neglected by the government in power. This is quite clear from the fact that the government has performed poorly and underwhelmingly on all top governance issues as rated by the voters of Tamil Nadu," ADR report added.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. job market in April cleared a key hurdle in its slow return from the COVID-19 pandemic when a wonky economic chart known as the Beveridge Curve finished its own journey from where it had shifted during the health crisis back to where it was in 2018 to 2019. The Beveridge Curve plots the relationship between...

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to win a rare third term in office, but a smaller-than-expected mandate means he will have to lean more on his allies for support, and that means urgently addressing issues like unemployment, inflation and economic disparities in the world's most populous nation. Unlike the last two elections, Modi's Hindu nationalist...
