NIRF Rankings 2019: Here are the top 10 engineering colleges in India, according to HRD ministry

SUMMARY

For the past four years, the government has been releasing the top educational institutes under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) framework. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, topped the ranking of higher education institutes. Of top 10 institutes, seven are IITs. The ranking framework instituted in 2016, evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters, including Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR). Here are the top 10 engineering colleges in India:

1. IIT Madras: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, topped the national ranking of higher education institutes and engineering colleges in India. Founded in 1959, the college is situated in Chennai. It was the third IIT that was established by the government of India.

2. IIT Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was established in 1961. The college has also been given the status of Institute of Eminence (IoE) by the government, enabling it to get full autonomy and special incentives to project it as a world class university. IIT-D ranked third in the overall list.

3. IIT Bombay: The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, was established in 1958. The college is known for its flagship four-year and five-year programmes for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). IIT-B ranked fourth in the overall list.

4. IIT Kharagpur: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, was established in 1951. It was the first of the IITs to be established and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India. Overall, the IIT ranked fifth in the NIRF 2019 rankings.

5. IIT Kanpur: The institute was established in 1960. It was created with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP). The institute ranked sixth in the overall rankings of higher educational institutions.(Image" Facebook/IIT Kanpur)

6. IIT Roorkee: The college was established in 1857 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was formerly called Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It was converted to an IIT in 2001. The institute ranked seventh in the NIRF 2019 rankings.

7. IIT Guwahati: This was the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the All Assam Students Union and the government of India. The accord mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT. Overall, the IIT is ninth best institution in India. 8. IIT Hyderabad: IIT-H was founded in 2008. The institute was established by the ministry of human resource development under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011.

9. Anna University: Anna University is a state technical university situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was established on September 4, 1978.

10. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli: The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, (NITT or NIT Trichy) is an engineering institution near Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1964, it is one of the oldest NIT in the country.
