Reservation for economically weaker upper castes: Government to bring constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday
Jan 7, 2019 7:32 AM

The government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday to implement 10 percent reservation to economically backward upper castes in government jobs, said sources familiar with the matter.

Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision, sources said, requesting anonymity.

This reservation will be over and above the existing 50 percent reservation, sources told CNBC-TV18, adding that there are legal precedents and constitutional provisions which allow it.

With about five months left for the Lok Sabha elections, the union cabinet on Monday approved 10 percent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically backward section in the general category.

"The reservation will be given to those economically backward poor people who are not availing the benefit of reservation as of now," a source said.

The reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of land, sources added.
