The BSE Sensex ended at 36,841.60, slumping by 279.62 points, or 0.75 percent, while the NSE Nifty50 closed at 11,143.10, down by 91.25 points, or 0.81 percent. Indices recovered towards the closing after an extremely volatile session in mid-afternoon. The BSE Sensex traded in a large range of 1,500 Points intra-day. The Nifty too slipped below 10,900 for a brief period before reclaiming 11,000. Both the Sensex and the midcap index recover over 900 points from lows.

The Nifty Bank index fell as much as 5 percent, its steepest fall since the day after the announcement of demonetisation, as panic-stricken investors liquidated positions. Domestic equities saw a sharp fall today on panic in money market as a large money market fund was rumoured to have sold Rs 3 billion worth of commercial papers of Dewan Housing Finance Corp. ltd at a steep discount, triggering concern over liquidity. Shares of YES Bank, Punjab National Bank, IDFC Bank, RBL Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bank of Baroda and Federal Bank led the losses on the index. Shares of Dewan Housing Finance Corp. ltd hit an 18-month low of Rs 305.30, tanking nearly 50 percent, as investors booked profit in the NBFC share. Shares traded at Rs 311.55, massively lower by 48.97 percent, losing Rs 299 in value. The stock started at the opening high of Rs 615.15, after its last close of Rs 610.55. Nifty Financial Service traded lower by over a percent. Apart from DHFL, Indiabulls Housing Finance plunged over 24 percent, M&M Finance by over 9.5 percent, Bajaj Finance by 7.53 percent, Bajaj Finserv dipped over 6 percent.

Equity indices fell sharply erasing all gains from the trade in the first half. The NSE Nifty50 dipped below 11,200, trading lower by over 84 points, or 0.75 percent, to 11,149.70. The BSE Sensex fell below 37,000, trading at 36,979.26, falling by 142 points, or 0.38 percent.

Shares of Adani Enterprises gained 4 percent as the Bombay high court granted interim relief to the company in the case related to alleged overpricing of coal imports. The court restrained the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence from taking action in seeking information from the Singapore government on alleged overpricing of coal imports by the Adani Group, till further orders. The court said it is open to the government issuing a show-cause notice to the Adani Group's overseas company under the Customs Act. At 12.18 pm, shares traded at Rs 148.95, higher by 1.09 percent. Equity indices have been able to maintain gains. The NSE Nifty50 traded at 11,294.35, higher by 60 points, or 0.53 percent. The BSE Sensex traded at 37,362.68, surging by 241.46 points, or 0.65 percent.

Equity indices extended gains with the BSE Sensex surging by over 325 points, or 0.88 percent, to trade at 37,446.51 at 11.10 am. The NSE Nifty traded at 11,331.05, higher by 96.70 points, or 0.86 percent. Midcaps under perform frontline indexes. The Nifty MidCap traded higher by 0.21 percent, while the BSE MidCap rose 0.40 percent. Yes Bank shares recovered from the day's low to trade lower by nearly 20 percent to Rs 256. Other laggards include Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Vodafone Idea, Hindustan Unilever, Sun Pharma and TCS, declining by up to 1.46 percent. Axis Bank, Bharti Infratel, ICICI Bank, HPCL, Tata Steel, M&M and SBI were top gainers, rising by up to 3.79 percent. Among sectoral indices on the BSE, IT, Teck and Realty traded weak.

Shares of Jet Airways (India) Ltd, the country’s biggest full-service airline, fall as much 7.1 percent to Rs 225.85 rupees, lowest since October 2014. Income tax officials were conducting a survey at its premises, the company said on Thursday, but it did not elaborate further. Separately, over two dozen passengers on one of its flight were treated for minor injuries on Thursday after their plane lost cabin pressure and was forced to turn back, aviation authorities said. Jet said the flight’s cockpit crew had been taken off scheduled duties until investigation was completed. The airline’s woes continue as it battles rising costs and pay dispute with its pilots. More than 3.4 million shares change hands, compared with 30-day average of 7.8 million share. Up to Wednesday’s close, stock had declined over 70 percent this year.

The BSE Sensex jumped over 157 points, or 0.42 percent, to start at 37,278.89 in the opening trade. At 9.16 am, the 30-share BSE index surged higher by 175 points, or 0.47 percent, to trade at 37,296.25. The NSE Nifty50 also started higher at 11,271.30, rising by 36.95 points, or 0.33 percent. The 50-share broader NSE index also rose further by nearly 71 points, or 0.47 percent to trade at 11,305.20. Yes Bank shares plunged 30 percent as CEO Rana Kapoor to exit on January 31, 2019. HDFC twins, Reliance, ITC and bank stocks lifted indexes.
