The BSE Sensex slipped 234 points from highs to end with a gain of 157 points at 35,807 and the NSE Nifty50 falling 54 points from highs, but holding on to 50-day moving average of 10,770 with close coming in at 10,780. While Reliance, Infosys and ITC kept benchmark indices in the green, financial stocks of HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and SBI kept gains in the check, leading Nifty Bank 108 points lower to 26,852. The Nifty Midcap Index, led by RBL Bank and Federal bank, ended the session 58 points higher at 17,631. Amongst Nifty stocks, oil marketing companies made a sharp recovery from lows as crude failed to hold overnight gains.

Shares of Heritage Foods extended their gains for the fourth session and hit a one-month high of Rs 565 as the government has extended the ban on Chinese dairy products till April 23. Heritage Foods is among the largest private sector dairy enterprises in South India and the ban on Chinese melamine-contaminated milk products is likely to boost sales for the company. It is likely to gain more as it is showing signs of strength on technical charts, an analyst said. Analysts believe that the upside in the stock will, however, be limited to Rs 650, while any dip will find support at Rs 505. Shares of the company were up 3.7% at Rs 552.05.

Container Corporation of India shares rallied 4 percent intraday after global brokerage house PhillipCapital has maintained buy call on the stock and sees a whopping 38 percent potential upside to Rs 900 levels. The research house retained its buy call after the Indian railways offered hefty discount in haulage of empty containers and flat wagon movement.

"25 percent discount in rail haulage charge is positive for cost reduction & volume growth of the company, and with revised rates, haulage cost for empty container would decline from around 10 to Rs 7.50 per km," PhillipCapital said.

The construction arm of L&T has won orders worth Rs 2,357 crore on Thursday.
