Exchange-Traded Funds Edge Up, US Equities Mixed Amid Higher Treasury Yields

01:02 PM EDT, 05/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds, including IWM and IVV, were edging higher. Actively-traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 0.1%.

US benchmark stock indexes were mixed but holding close to record highs while government bond yields rose after midday on Friday.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 0.8% and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) gained 0.8%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was down 0.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were lower.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) edged up 0.1% while iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) fell 0.4%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X shares (FAS) was up 1% and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 1%.

Commodities

Crude was up 0.4%; United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 0.4%. Natural gas was up 3% and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) increased 3.4%.

Gold was up 1.4% based on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 1.3%. Silver was up 3.8% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) increased 4%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.4%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were lower.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) gained 0.3%; retail funds VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were lower.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 0.1% and other funds iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were lower. Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.4%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) contracted 0.3% while other industrial funds iShares U.S. Industrials (IYJ), and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) were lower.
