Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Friday Ahead of Fed Board Changes

08:58 AM EDT, 08/08/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.4% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.4% higher in Friday's premarket activity, ahead of changes at the Federal Reserve Board as Stephen Miran is set to succeed Adriana Kugler.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.3%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.3%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

The weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count will be released at 1 pm ET.

Federal Reserve St. Louis President Alberto Musalem speaks on Friday.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 0.6%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.6% lower, Ether ETF (EETH) was up 1.1%, and the Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was flat.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.5, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.01% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) advanced 0.3%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.4%.

Viavi Solutions ( VIAV ) shares were up more than 20% in recent premarket activity after the company overnight reported higher fiscal Q4 non-GAAP earnings and revenue.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was down 0.02% The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) gained 0.03%, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) advanced 0.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was 0.3% higher.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber ( GT ) shares were down 8% pre-bell after the company reported a Q2 adjusted loss and lower revenue.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 1.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1.3% lower.

TeraWulf ( WULF ) shares were up more than 4% pre-bell Friday after the company reported higher Q2 revenue.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.5%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.1% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) rose 1.2%.

Crinetics Pharmaceuticals ( CRNX ) stock was down more than 2% premarket after the company reported a wider Q2 loss.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.4% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

Arcosa ( ACA ) stock was up more than 2% before the opening bell after the company reported higher Q2 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.6%.

Denison Mines ( DNN ) stock was up 1% before Friday's opening bell after the company swung to Q2 earnings.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 0.6% at $64.25 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas retreated 0.9% to $3.04 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was 0.4% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) fell 1.6%

Gold futures for December advanced 0.6% to $3,473.20 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were up 0.6% to $38.51 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) gained by 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.1% higher.
