Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Thursday Ahead of Key Economic Data

08:12 AM EDT, 04/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.6% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 1% lower in Thursday's premarket activity, ahead of key economic data.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.6%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.5%, and Nasdaq futures losing nearly 1% before the start of regular trading.

Economic reports slated for an 8.30 am ET release include the Q1 gross domestic product (GDP) bulletin, the international trade in goods bulletin for March, the weekly jobless claims report, and the retail and wholesale inventories for March reports.

The pending home sales index posts at 10 am ET, followed by the weekly EIA natural gas supplies report at 10:30 am ET.

The Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Index for April will be released at 11 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 1.1% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.6% higher.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.6%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.4% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was down 1.4%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) lost 0.2%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) gained 0.5%.

International Business Machines ( IBM ) shares were down 8.8% in recent Thursday premarket activity after the company reported Q1 revenue of $14.46 billion, just shy of analysts' estimates of $14.50 billion.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was flat while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was also inactive.

AstraZeneca ( AZN ) shares rose 5% premarket after the company reported Q1 core earnings of $2.06 per diluted share, up 7% from a year earlier.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.1%.

Vista Energy (VIST) shares were down 5.2% before Thursday's opening bell after the company reported Q1 adjusted income Wednesday of $0.49 per diluted share, down from $0.80 a year earlier.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) was 0.1% higher. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.3% higher.

Deutsche Bank ( DB ) shares were up 6% pre-bell Thursday after the company reported Q1 earnings of 0.69 euros ($0.74) per diluted share, up from 0.61 euros a year earlier.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) retreated 0.2% and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was up 0.1%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Caterpillar ( CAT ) shares were 4% lower before the opening bell after the company reported lower year-over-year Q1 revenue.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was flat. The Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC), the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK), Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY), and the VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) were inactive. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) slipped 0.1%.

Monster Beverage ( MNST ) shares traded down 3.2% pre-bell after Truist Securities and JP Morgan downgraded the company's rating and cut price targets.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.2% to $83 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas gained nearly 1% to $1.67 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was 0.1% higher, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.3% lower.

Gold futures for June gained nearly 0.1% to $2,339.50 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures were up by 0.4% to $27.72 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) advanced 0.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.7% higher.
