Exchange-Traded Funds Lower, US Equities Mixed After Midday

01:11 PM EST, 02/27/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.8%.

US equity indexes were mixed after midday Thursday as investors digested economic reports, Nvidia's (NVDA) results and US President Donald Trump's plan to press ahead with import tariffs on three of the country's biggest trading partners.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) rose 1%, and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) advanced 1.3%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) retreated 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also in the red.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 3%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) shed 2.4%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) climbed 1.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) gained 3.6%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) lost 3.7%.

Commodities

Crude oil rose 2.2%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 2%. Natural gas gained 1.1%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.2% lower.

Gold was down 1.3% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) dipped 1.3%. Silver slid 1.5%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) lost 1.1%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) edged up 0.2%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also advancing.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) eased 0.2%; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) was 0.3% higher, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) fell 0.8%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.3%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were also up. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) edged up 0.2%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) rose 0.5%, and Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were higher.
