Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Rise After Midday

01:07 PM EDT, 05/08/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was up 1.8%.

US equity indexes jumped in midday trading Thursday after President Donald Trump unveiled a trade deal with the UK ahead of high-level tariff talks with China over the weekend.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) were each up 2.2%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 1.8%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) added 2.1% and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was 2% higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) advanced 3.8%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) gained 2.5%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) added 1.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 5.3%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), dropped 4.9%.

Commodities

Crude oil was 3.2% higher, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 3.2%. Natural gas shed 1.7%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) fell 1.8%.

Gold slipped 2.2% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was down 2%. Silver edged down 0.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) climbed 0.1%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was up 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) also advanced.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 2%; VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was up 0.9%, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) rose 2.1%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) lost 0.1%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) moved higher. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 0.5%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) added 2.2%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) each gained 2.2%.
