In corporate news, Vista Outdoor ( VSTO ) received a new and unsolicited cash offer from a private-equity firm for its shooting sports division, while its board rejected a sweetened takeover offer from MNC Capital Partners. Vista shares were adding 0.6%.
Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) shares climbed 8% after Elliot Investment Management confirmed its about $1.9 billion stake in the low-cost carrier, while the activist investor called for new leadership at the company alongside a broad review of the business.
Backed by Bain Capital, Edgar Bronfman Jr. has expressed interest in making an offer of between $2 billion and $2.5 billion to buy National Amusements, the privately held company that controls Paramount (PARA), the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. Paramount shares were falling 1%.
