Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Slide in Afternoon Trading

01:45 PM EDT, 10/01/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were lower Tuesday afternoon, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) down 0.5% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) falling 0.9%.

Redbook US same-store sales rose by 5.3% from a year earlier in the week ended Sept. 28 after a 4.4% year-over-year increase in the previous week.

In corporate news, McCormick ( MKC ) lifted its full-year adjusted earnings outlook on Tuesday as the spices and seasonings producer logged better-than-expected fiscal Q3 results. Its shares rose 0.7%.

PepsiCo ( PEP ) shares added 0.3% after the company said Tuesday that it agreed to buy Garza Food Ventures, which does business as Siete Foods, for $1.2 billion.

Johnson Controls International ( JCI ) is starting a process to sell its ADT alarms business, which could be valued at about $2 billion in a deal, Bloomberg reported. Johnson Controls ( JCI ) shares were down 1.4%.
