03:46 PM EDT, 10/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks rose late Monday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index up 0.4% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) adding 0.7%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index eased 0.1%, while the Dow Jones US Utilities index fell 2.4%.
Crude oil jumped amid reports of a meeting being scheduled between Iran and Russia to assess the Middle East crisis.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 3.8% to $77.19 a barrel while global benchmark Brent advanced 3.8% to $81.00 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures slumped 4% to $2.74 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, American Water Works ( AWK ) detected unauthorized activity in its computer systems and networks Thursday. The shares fell 4.2%.
Greenfire Resources ( GFR ) shares rose 1.1% after the company unveiled initiatives to increase its net production capacity 74% to 58,800 barrels a day.
Chevron's ( CVX ) Canadian unit agreed to sell its 20% non-operated interest in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project and a 70% operated interest in the Duvernay shale formation to Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ) for $6.5 billion in cash. Chevron ( CVX ) shares added 0.5%.
Duke Energy ( DUK ) warned Sunday of possible power outages and equipment damage for its Florida service area ahead of Tropical Storm Milton. Duke shares fell 3.3%.
