Sector Update: Health Care Stocks Decline Late Afternoon

04:14 PM EDT, 10/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Health care stocks fell late Thursday afternoon, with the NYSE Health Care Index down 0.7% and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) decreasing 0.5%.

The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) shed 0.4%.

In corporate news, Marinus Pharmaceuticals ( MRNS ) shares plunged 82% after the company said its phase 3 trial of oral ganaxolone failed to meet the main goal and announced plans to cut costs and explore alternatives for the business.

Monopar Therapeutics ( MNPR ) shares soared 558%. The company agreed to buy the global rights to ALXN-1840, a drug candidate for Wilson disease that successfully completed a Phase 3 trial, from a division of AstraZeneca (AZN).

Molina Healthcare ( MOH ) shares jumped 18% after the company reported Q3 adjusted earnings and revenue that beat market expectations.

Viking Therapeutics ( VKTX ) shares surged 21% in recent trading, a day after the company reported a narrower-than-expected Q3 loss.
