The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) rose 0.5%.
In corporate news, Seelos Therapeutics ( SEEL ) shares tumbled 21%. The company said late Thursday that its 2024 annual meeting of stockholders scheduled for Friday has been postponed due to an "anticipated lack of quorum, and to provide further time to solicit proxies from the company's stockholders."
Cassava Sciences ( SAVA ) shares dropped 11% after the company said late Thursday it has agreed to pay a $40 million penalty to settle a US Securities and Exchange Commission case against it over allegedly misleading statements made related to the results of a phase 2 trial for its Alzheimer's disease drug candidate.
Bristol-Myers Squibb ( BMY ) obtained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Cobenfy drug to treat schizophrenia in adults. The shares rose 1.7%.
Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) shares fell 2.6% as JP Morgan analyst Richard Vosser said in a note that the drugmaker's Q3 financial results may cause "some disappointment," according to media reports. Vosser cited the possibility of weaker-than-expected Q3 sales figures for the company's weight-loss drug Wegovy, according to the reports.
