Microsoft unveils Xbox subscription service to ward off competition
Sep 4, 2018 1:17 AM

Microsoft Corp has launched a two-year subscription service for its video gaming console Xbox and will sell it like Apple sells its iPhones.

The Xbox All Access pass will cost either $21.99 or $34.99 per month, depending on the console chosen, and will include access to game-streaming service Xbox Game Pass and online multiplayer service Xbox Live Gold for one price, according to the company's website.

At the end of two years, the renter will fully own the console. The subscription option is cheaper than the usual separate purchase of a console and both online services.

With Xbox All Access, the buyer gets a new Xbox One S or Xbox One X, unlimited access to over 100 great games with Xbox Game Pass for 24 months, and online multiplayer with Xbox Live Gold for 24 months.

Microsoft is selling the Xbox One S and Xbox One X through monthly installment plans. That means you can buy it like you would an expensive phone, paying off the cost over two years.

After two years, it can offer upgrades to newer models of the Xbox, similar to how Apple and wireless carriers offer upgrades to phone buyers, keeping them locked out from competitors, reported CNBC.

However, there are constraints in the subscription plan: It's available only in the U.S., you have to go to a physical Microsoft store to sign up) and sign-ups will end after an unspecified "limited time."
