Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Friday as Investor Concerns Linger Amid Middle East Conflict

09:17 AM EDT, 03/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.4% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.6% lower in Friday's premarket activity as investor concerns linger amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.5%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures retreating 0.7% before the start of regular trading.

The University of Michigan consumer sentiment report for the current month is slated to be released at 10 am ET.

Federal Reserve Richmond President Thomas Barkin, Federal Reserve San Francisco President Mary Daly and Federal Reserve Philadelphia President Anna Paulson speak today.

The weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count is due at 1 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 2.6%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.9% lower, Ether ETF (EETH) fell by 0.04%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was marginally down by 0.01%.

Power Play:

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) retreated 1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.7% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was flat. Among semiconductor ETFs, the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) fell 0.2%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) declined by 1%.

Unity Software ( U ) stock was 16% higher pre-bell Friday, a day after the company said it expected Q1 revenue of $505 million to $508 million, compared with its earlier guidance range of $480 million to $490 million.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLV ) retreated by 0.1%, the Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.6%, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) advanced 0.8%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 0.2%.

Rocket Pharmaceuticals ( RCKT ) stock was up 8% in Friday premarket activity after the company said it has received the US Food and Drug Administration accelerated approval for Kresladi to treat pediatric patients with severe leukocyte adhesion deficiency-I.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) was marginally up by 0.01%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (VDC) and the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) were flat. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) gained 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.5% lower.

TripAdvisor ( TRIP ) shares were 3.9% higher before the opening bell on Friday after BofA Securities upgraded the company's stock to buy from neutral.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) retreated by 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was down 1%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.8% higher.

Barclays ( BCS ) shares were down 1.4% before Friday's bell after the company faced a 1.65 million-euro ($1.9 million) fine from the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority for a breach of supervisory duties in connection with contraventions of the German Securities Trading Act.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLI ) retreated 0.6%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was down 0.1%, and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was flat.

Wheaton Precious Metals ( WPM ) shares were up 1.2% before Friday's opening bell after UBS upgraded the company's stock to buy from neutral.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) advanced 0.2%, while the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ) was up by 0.5%.

Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) shares were marginally up by 0.2% before the opening bell Friday after multiple media outlets reported that the company's interests in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium are not being targeted by Russia.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose by 2.5% to $96.88 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas advanced by 3.9% to $3.04 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was up by 3.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 4.5% higher.

Gold futures for April advanced by 1.1% to $4,422.70 an ounce on the Comex. Silver futures increased 0.1% to $67.97 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) gained by 1.5%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) rose 1.3%.
