Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Lower Pre-Bell Tuesday Ahead of Key Inflation Data

08:15 AM EDT, 05/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was down 0.1% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) retreated 0.1% in Tuesday's premarket activity as investors focus on upcoming inflation figures.

US stock futures were also lower, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.3%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.5%, and Nasdaq futures losing 0.2% before the start of regular trading.

US small-business sentiment declined for a fourth consecutive month in April as owners grew more cautious about the economic outlook and scaled back hiring plans, according to NFIB data released Tuesday.

April's consumer price index bulletin will be released at 8:30 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 1.1% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.6% higher.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) retreated 0.8%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was down 1.6%, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) slipped 0.3%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) stock was down more than 10% premarket after the company suspended its full-year outlook and named Stephen Hemsley its chief executive.

Winners and Losers:

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) retreated 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was down 0.4%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.4% higher.

Coinbase Global ( COIN ) shares were up more than 9% pre-bell Tuesday. S&P Global (SPGI) division S&P Dow Jones Indices said late Monday Coinbase will replace Discover Financial Services ( DFS ) in the S&P 500, effective before market open on May 19. Discover stock was down nearly 1%.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was flat, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was 0.02% higher. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.2%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Honda Motor ( HMC ) shares were down more than 4% pre-bell after the company reported lower fiscal Q4 operating profit and revenue.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) retreated 0.1% while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) advanced 0.3%. The iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Satellogic ( SATL ) stock was up more than 4% before the opening bell after the company reported late Monday that it secured a "multi-million dollar agreement" with a customer in the Asia-Pacific region.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) retreated 0.2%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.2% lower, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.03%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) retreated 0.1%.

Silicon Laboratories ( SLAB ) shares were up more than 4% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company reported a narrower fiscal Q1 loss and higher revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was flat, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.3%.

Venture Global ( VG ) stock was up 1.6% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company posted lower Q1 earnings.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained nearly 1%, reaching $62.56 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas advanced 0.8% to $3.67 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was up 1.3%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 0.5% higher.

Gold futures for June gained 1.1% to reach $3,262.80 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures advanced 1.8% to $33.22 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) increased 0.6%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.2% higher.
