Stocks Down Pre-Bell Amid Global Tech Outage; Asia, Europe Fall

07:38 AM EDT, 07/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US equity futures were trending downwards before Friday's open as a global tech outage disrupted operations across various industries.

The S&P 500 futures declined 0.2% while the Nasdaq and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were off 0.3% each in premarket activity. The majority of Asian exchanges were tracking in the red, while European bourses were heading south midday on the continent.

A global outage linked to Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Crowdstrike ( CRWD ) platforms impacted operations across multiple industries worldwide, affecting flights, broadcasts, as well as the banking and health care systems, according to multiple reports. Shares of Microsoft ( MSFT ) fell 2.1% pre-bell. Crowdstrike ( CRWD ) dropped 10% as Chief Executive George Kurtz reportedly said on the X platform that the incident was not a cyber attack.

Netflix ( NFLX ) shares ticked down 1.1% before the bell despite the streaming giant's stronger-than-expected second-quarter results. Intuitive Surgical ( ISRG ) advanced 6.4% as the robotic surgical system maker's results for the June quarter topped market estimates. PPG Industries ( PPG ) fell 4.6% as the company lowered its full-year adjusted earnings outlook.

American Express ( AXP ) second-quarter adjusted earnings came in at $3.49 per diluted share, up from $2.89 a year earlier. Schlumberger ( SLB ) earned $0.85 per diluted share in the June quarter, up from $0.72 a year earlier.

Travelers Cos ( TRV ). (TRV), Wipro ( WIT ) , Halliburton ( HAL ) and Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ) are also scheduled to report their latest financial results early Friday, among others.

The weekly Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count posts at 1 pm ET. Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams is set to speak at 10:40 am, while Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic speaks at 1 pm.

Before the opening bell, bitcoin gained 0.7% to $64,017, West Texas Intermediate crude oil slipped 0.2% to $82.63 a barrel, yields on 10-year Treasuries advanced 2.5 basis points to 4.21% and gold fell 1.8% to $2,413 an ounce.
