10:16 AM EST, 12/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is in talks to get rid of a clause that prevents Microsoft ( MSFT ) from getting access to its most advanced technology when OpenAI reaches "artificial general intelligence," the Financial Times reported, quoting unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.
OpenAI defines AGM as a "highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work." OpenAI is mulling removing the clause from its structure, which would allow Microsoft ( MSFT ) to keep investing in and accessing all of its technology, even after AGI is achieved, the FT said. A final decision on the matter has not been reached and other options are on the table, the report said, adding OpenAI is currently restructuring to become a public benefit corporation instead of a not-for-profit research lab.
Ditching the provision would unlock billions of dollars of potential investment from Microsoft ( MSFT ), the report said, adding that it's up to OpenAI's board to decide when AGI is reached.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to requests for comment by MT Newswires.
